      <description>Second call for papers

4th symposium on Preserving Archaeological Remains in situ (PARIS4)

May 23rd – 26th 2011

The National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen

International legislation, such as the Valetta treaty, calls for the “conservation and maintenance of the archaeological heritage, preferably in situ”. Since 1996 research into in situ preservation has been presented at a series of international conferences: Preserving Archaeological Remains in situ (PARIS). The fourth of these conferences will be held in Copenhagen at the National Museum of Denmark in May 2011.

After fifteen years of research and practical application the time is ripe to evaluate the efficacy of in situ preservation as a means of managing the cultural resource. The key aim of the conference is to present and discuss the latest knowledge, focusing on long term studies of degradation and monitoring of archaeological sites preserved in situ in urban, rural and marine environments.

One of the strengths of the previous PARIS conferences has been in their multidisciplinary nature bringing together scientists, heritage managers and policy makers. Building on this the organizers especially call for presentations from practitioners and stakeholders to cover the following themes:

1. Degradation of archaeological remains. Can we quantify degradation rates and what rates are acceptable?

2. Monitoring and mitigation case studies – with special focus on long term projects.&amp;nbsp; How, and how long, should sites be monitored?

3. Protocols, standards and legislation for monitoring and management. Is it realistic to make multinational standards when the sites and national legislations are so variable?

4. Preserving Archaeological Remains in situ. Can we document the effectiveness of in situ preservation after nearly 2 decades of research?

All sessions will be lead by two chairmen: one practitioner and one administrator, who will both evaluate and comment upon the presentations. The presentations are planned to be published as a special edition of the journal Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites.

Proposals for papers, with abstracts of less than 300 words, should be sent to: David Gregory/Henning Matthiesen, The National Museum of Denmark, Department of Conservation, IC Modewegsvej, DK&#45;2800 Lyngby, Denmark, or by fax +45 33 47 33 27 or by email to paris4@natmus.dk by the 1st of September 2010. Oral and poster presentations will be selected by a scientific committee on the basis of relevance to the themes, scientific quality and ability to reach a mixed audience. Please indicate if you would prefer oral or poster presentation.

More information and a conference flyer is available at: http://www.natmus.dk/paris4

<description>The Graduate Program in Historic Preservation/School of Design at the
University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with the R. Lemaire
International Centre for Conservation (University of Leuven) are organizing
an International Symposium on Heritage Recording and Information Management
in the Digital Age (SMARTDoc Heritage), November 19&#45;20, 2010 in Philadelphia,
USA.

Beginning in 2006 Robin Letelier brought his vision of an integrated
graduate level course in heritage recording, documentation and information
management to the Program in Historic Preservation at the University of
Pennsylvania.&amp;nbsp; Today that course curriculum, now under the direction of
Mario Santana, represents the synthesis of principles and practices
considered fundamental knowledge for all heritage professionals. This
symposium, initially planned by Robin at UPenn, is dedicated to that vision
and his tireless effort to promote heritag e conservation through research,
teaching, and public service.

Good decisions in heritage conservation are based on timely, relevant and
accurate information about the conditions, materials and evolution of
heritage buildings and landscapes. Therefore, documenting, recording and
analyzing heritage places are an essential part of their conservation and
management.

The rapid rise in new digital technologies has revolutionized the practice
of recording the built heritage.&amp;nbsp; Digital tools and media offer a myriad of
new opportunities for collecting, analyzing and disseminating information
about heritage sites. Issues regarding the proper, innovative and
research&#45;focused uses of digital media in heritage conservation are an
urgent topic in the global heritage conservation field, and Penn, KU&#45;Leuven
and its partners have played a leading role in this area of
cross&#45;disciplinary research and practice.&amp;nbsp; The SMARTdoc symposium offer a
unique opportunity for educators, professionals, heritage institutions, and
managers of heritage places to share, exchange, and explore new approaches,
best practices, and research results in the area of heritage informatics.

      <guid>http://precomos.org/index.php/news/phd_position_silk_road_project/#When:13:35:25Z</guid>
      <description>JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: PHD Position
Project: Silk Road (Central&#45;Asia) &#45; Development of an Information System in view of the nomination of the serial World Heritage Site
WHP Silk Road (3 years grant funded with possibility of one year extension)
Period 2010 – 2012 financed by the Belgian Science and Policy Agency

Project description

As a follow&#45;up to the Periodic Report for Asia, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) have been assisting States Parties in identifying new and under&#45;represented categories of properties to be nominated for possible inscription on the World Heritage List. In this context, an initiative was launched in 2005 for the nomination of a serial and/or transnational World Heritage property representing the cultural phenomenon of the Silk Roads.

The initiative involves for the time being six States Parties from East and Central Asia – the People’s Republic of China and the Republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan – and has progressed over the last few years on the basis of a concept paper and through a number of regional workshops and preparatory work at the national level.

The project proposal aims at providing a holistic approach for the recording, documentation, protection and monitoring of potential World Heritage Properties in the Silk Road’s C&#45;Asian countries. This will be carried out in consultation with Belgian Federal Science Policy Office and with UNESCO by a Belgian consortium headed by the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (RLICC), University of Leuven.

In addition to the development of an approach, this project is aimed at developing capacities in the C&#45;Asia countries in World Heritage documentation, protection, management, monitoring and in preparing periodic reporting based on documentation and monitoring.

The proposal wants to start from yet existing understanding of the documentation and monitoring needs in the region for the purpose of the preparation of a (serial) nomination application to the World Heritage List.&amp;nbsp; Further research will complete those needs with up&#45;to&#45;date international standards on identification, documentation and monitoring aspects of local, regional and universal value.&amp;nbsp; So doing it may become a standard for similar regional and world&#45;wide activities.

Profile

This research position as PhD research candidate with a PhD&#45;grant is located in the Raymond Lemaire International centre for Conservation (University of Leuven). Established by Professor Raymond Lemaire († 1997) in 1976, at the initiative of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), within the framework of the College of Europe in Bruges, the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (RLICC) is now part of the post&#45;initial&#45;master’s programme of the Faculty of Engineering of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The RLICC is dependent upon two departments of the Faculty, the department of Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning and the Department of Civil Engineering.

The general objectives of the Centre are to gather thorough understanding of both the cultural and constructive features and the multi&#45;layered character of the historical architectural, urban and rural heritage, thereby transcending national, cultural and conventional professional boundaries to stimulate exchange and feedback between academic theoretical research and the conservation practice to encourage intervention in the context of the historical architectural or urban environment, that reflect concepts of heritage conservation and sustainable development.

The proposed research fits within the objectives of the activities of the UNESCO chair on Preventive Conservation, Monitoring and Maintenance of Monuments and Sites (see: precomos.org). The research contribution of the selected candidate will be the major part of the PhD dissertation, therefore the research will have to be a fundamental contribution to the role of documentation in the nomination and the management of World Heritage Sites of exceptional nature (vast, based on routes as heritage concept, …).

Research candidates should have a good understanding of the procedures of World Heritage Sites nomination and periodic reporting; they should be able to reflect critically on the role of advanced documentation in the field understanding the role of monitoring in that respect; they should be able to collaborate in team with specialist in the field of remote sensing.&amp;nbsp; Knowledge on the cultures in the area of the Central Asian countries involved in the research or on the Silk Road is an advantage.

Inquiries can be send to: Hannelore De Keyser (hannelore.dekeyser@asro.kuleuven.be) at the attention of Prof. dr.ir.arch. K. Van Balen, director of the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation.
